How to Pick and Pack a Wholesale Order (Mobile)

The Mobile Picking & Packing flow is the default method when configuring a Picking Plan. Picking and packing happen simultaneously — inventory is scanned, assigned to LPNs (boxes or pallets), and moved to the staging location in one continuous process. A barcode scanner is required to validate locations and inventory.

Before You Begin

  • Generate LPNs in advance: Print any LPNs needed for boxes or pallets before starting. Generate them from the Inventory & Locations > LPNs page. See Overview: Managing License Plate Numbers (LPNs) in ShipHero for more information.
  • Inventory assignment: Upon completion of picking, all picked inventory will be transferred to the staging location selected in the Picking Plan.
  • Order type determines container: Courier orders use boxes (inner and outer). Freight orders use pallets as the final container, with inner and outer boxes optional.

For requirements, order types, and the full wholesale workflow, see Overview: The Wholesale Experience in ShipHero.

Picking and Packing a Courier Wholesale Order

In the Courier flow, picked inventory is packed into inner boxes (optional) and outer boxes, each assigned an LPN. Follow the steps below from start to finish.

Step 1. Select the order from the list. You will see an order summary showing the order name, staging location, total units to pick, and a list of all pick locations with required SKUs, UOM, and quantities.

Example Order Summary

Order Info:

  • Order name
  • Staging location (where inventory will be taken)
  • Total units to pick (in eaches or UOMs)

List of Locations:

  • All locations assigned to pick inventory from
  • Required SKU, unit of measure, and quantity needed per location

Step 2. Scan or tap a location to start. If you tap the location from the list, you will be asked to scan it to confirm.

Step 3a. After scanning the location, the Scan Item page appears with required quantities. Scan items one by one, or tap the Picked number to manually enter the quantity.

Step 3b. To put all inventory in the same box, select Enter all required. To split picks across multiple boxes, tap Pack pick units and scan a BOX LPN.

Step 4. Assign picked inventory to inner and outer boxes using LPNs. The first time you pack units you will see an information screen with instructions.

Inner Box Configuration

An inner box is used when picking inventory into a box that will be shipped inside a larger outer box.

If an inner box is not required (e.g., products are shipped in their own container or you are picking directly to an outer box), choose one of the following options:

  • Skip: Goes directly to outer box configuration for the items picked. The inner box option will continue to appear for subsequent picks.
  • Not required for this SKU: Suppresses the inner box prompt for this SKU for any partial picks on this order.
  • Not required for this Order: Suppresses the inner box prompt for the entire order.

  • To use an inner box: Scan an LPN, stick it to the box, then define the box dimensions.
  • To set dimensions: Scan the box barcode (if available) or select a package type from the list by choosing Set dimensions manually. Boxes must be created in Shipping > Boxes to appear in the list.
  • After choosing the box, select whether to use the same box type for all inner boxes on this order. Choosing Use same dimensions skips the dimension prompt for subsequent inner box LPNs.

After completing the inner box configuration, you will be directed to configure the outer box.

Outer Box Configuration

The outer box is sent to the carrier and is required to complete packing. If you are shipping a product in its own packaging, you still need to assign an outer box LPN to each carton.

  • To use an outer box: Scan an LPN, stick it to the box, then define the dimensions.
  • If you always use the same outer box dimensions, configure that preference at this step.

Step 5. After finishing all units at a location, you return to the pending locations list. Scroll up to see the picking summary — inventory picked, quantities, how items were packed (inner or outer box), and the LPN of each box. The wholesale manager can monitor progress in real time on the desktop:

Step 6. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all locations and items are processed.

Step 7. After picking all required items the summary will show no remaining items. If needed, the picker can adjust the weight and dimensions of built pallets directly from the Picking Summary before shipping documentation is generated.

Once complete, the wholesale order moves to Packing status. The manager can review all picked and packed inventory and make any necessary modifications.

Picking and Packing a Freight Wholesale Order

The Freight flow follows the same steps as the Courier flow with one key difference: inner and outer boxes are optional, and the final container must be a Pallet LPN. All scanning, location confirmation, and item picking steps outlined in the Courier flow apply here.

Pallet Configuration

  • Scan your pallet LPN. Set the Pallet Type (e.g., Standard, Euro, Australian). Pallet types must be created in Shipping > Boxes to appear in the list.

Picking Cases or UOM in the Freight Flow

When picking Case UOMs (Master Case or Inner Case), the system will prompt you to choose how to pack the cases:

Option Example

Option 1: Pack Cases in Boxes

Requires scanning a Box LPN and then the Pallet LPN.

Option 2: Pack Cases Directly on Pallet

Skips the Box LPN step and moves directly to the Pallet LPN scan.
