Location types let you categorize storage areas in your warehouse — for example, bins, pallets, upper racks, or floor-loaded areas. They help identify the equipment needed to move inventory (such as a forklift or pallet jack) and make storage billing easier to manage for 3PLs with location-based pricing.

How to Create a Location Type
Create location types manually in ShipHero or add them automatically when importing locations via CSV.
- Go to Inventory > Location Types.
- Select + Add a Location Type.
- Enter a Name for the location type.
- Select Add.
Once a location type is created, its name cannot be edited. To change the name, create a new location type and delete the old one.
Important for 3PLs
Use caution when deleting location types if you use 3PL Billing to charge storage fees. ShipHero uses the Location Type ID to process charges — if you delete a location type and recreate it with the same name, some charges may be missed or you may see unbilled operations for locations still tied to the previous location type.
How to Change the Location Type of a Location

For a single location:
- Select Edit next to the location.
- Choose a location type from the Type dropdown.
- Select Save.
For multiple locations:
- Select the checkboxes next to the locations you want to update.
- Select Bulk Edit in the top-right corner.
- Choose a location type from the dropdown.
- Select Save.
