Location types are used to categorize the different locations in the warehouse or describe how inventory is stored, e.g., bins and pallets, or upper rack and floor-loaded. Location types help identify different tools needed to access/move inventory, such as a forklift or pallet jack. Using location types also makes billing storage much more manageable for 3PLs, depending on their pricing model.
How to Create a Location Type
Location types can be created manually or when you are creating locations via CSV.
- Go to the Inventory > Location Types page.
- Select the +Add a Location Type button.
- Fill in the Name of your location type.
- Hit Add.
Once a location type is created the name cannot be edited. If you need to change the name of a location type, you will need to create a new one and delete the old one.
Note for 3PLs: Err on the side of caution when deleting location types, especially if you are using our 3PL Billing features to charge storage fees. The system uses the Location Type ID to process the charges, so even if you recreate a Location Type with the same name, there is a chance that some charges can be missed or you will see a list of unbilled operations for locations still associated with the previous location type.
How to Change the Location Type of a Location
You can change the location type of locations individually or in bulk on the Inventory Locations page.
- For a Single Location: Click the Edit button for the location, select the Location Type from the Type dropdown, and click Save.
- For Multiple Locations: Check off the locations you want to change, click the Bulk Edit button in the top right-hand corner, choose the Location Type from the dropdown, and hit Save.
