In a busy warehouse, organization is the difference between a seamless shipment and a logistical headache. License Plate Numbers (LPNs) are essential tools in ShipHero that allow you to group items together under a single barcode.
However, to keep your data clean and your mobile app running fast, ShipHero follows specific rules for nesting—the process of placing one LPN inside another. Understanding these rules ensures your team can pick, pack, and ship without hitting validation errors on the warehouse floor.
LPN BETA NOTICE: LPN functionality is cutrrently limited to the wholesale interface. Other LPN features are currently in Beta. To enable the full suite of LPN options for your account, please contact your Customer Success Manager (CSM) or email Support@shiphero.com.
Please note that as this feature is actively being developed, processes may change and you may encounter occasional bugs. If you experience any issues or have suggestions, please reach out to our support team—your feedback is greatly appreciated as we continue to refine the ShipHero platform!
Inventory Nesting Rules
ShipHero supports a maximum of two levels for LPN nesting. Think of this as a Parent and Child relationship. You can put a box inside a pallet, but you cannot put a box inside a box that is already inside a pallet.
| Nesting Type | Allowed? | Example |
| Box to Pallet | Yes | Items inside a box, box placed on a pallet. |
| Inner Box to Outer Box | Yes | Small items in a box, placed in a Master Case. |
| Box to Box to Pallet | No | Exceeds the 2-level maximum depth. |
| Pallet to Pallet | No | Pallets must always be the final (top) level. |
IMPORTANT NESTING EXCEPTION: 3 levels of nesting is only allowed during the wholesale packing process. For example, an inner box inside an outer box on a pallet.
How to Nest LPNs with ShipHero Mobile
The Transfer Entire Location feature in ShipHero Mobile can be used to nest one LPN into another when both the source and destination scanned entities are LPNs.
This is especially useful when grouping multiple smaller cartons (child LPNs) into a larger container (parent LPN), such as preparing a pallet for outbound or staging a transfer.
- From the main menu, tap Inventory.
- Select Transfer Entire Location
- In the From field, scan the barcode of the source LPN — the LPN you want to move into another.
- In the To field, scan the desitination LPN’s barcode — this will become the Parent LPN. The application verifies that both the source and destination are valid LPNs before proceeding.
- Tap Confirm. The app shows a confirmation message.
