Properly managing SKUs is crucial for ensuring your products are correctly linked between your store platforms and ShipHero. This guide will walk you through the process of updating SKUs and highlight important considerations.
For most store integrations, if a product is imported without an SKU, ShipHero will automatically generate one using the product's name. However, some integrations, like TikTok, require the SKU to be entered in the store platform before ShipHero can pull the product in.
You have a couple of options for updating product SKUs:
- From your store platform: Refer to your store's help documentation for specific instructions on how to do this.
- Through ShipHero: You can update SKUs directly within the product details page in ShipHero.
Important Considerations Before Updating SKUs
Before making any SKU changes, please keep the following critical points in mind:
- Unique SKUs: Ensure the new SKU does not belong to any other products in ShipHero. If the SKU already exists, your updates will not be saved.
- No Leading or Trailing Blanks: Always verify there are no leading or trailing blank spaces for your SKUs. These can cause synchronization issues between ShipHero and your sales channels, leading to problems like mismatched SKUs or the creation of duplicate SKUs.
- Multi-Warehouse Accounts: For multi-warehouse accounts, SKU updates will be automatically applied to all warehouses where the SKU exists.
- Sales Channel Updates: When you update a product SKU via your connected sales channel, ShipHero will automatically detect and use the new SKU. All line items and other related data will reflect this new SKU.
- SKUs Shared Between Stores: Adjusting SKUs shared across multiple store platforms requires extra caution. Changing an SKU in one platform will not automatically update it in other connected store platforms. If an SKU exists in multiple store platforms connected to ShipHero, ensure your store settings are enabled to push the change across all platforms. We recommend partnering with your Customer Success Manager (CSM) or our support team for best practices, as each store integration handles SKU updates differently.
How to Update an SKU in ShipHero
Given the sensitive nature of SKU updates, ShipHero only allows you to update a single product's SKU at a time.
Note for Shopify and BigCommerce Users: Shopify and BigCommerce are the only store integrations with a setting that allows SKU updates in ShipHero to also update the product in the store platform. This setting must be enabled on the My Account > Store > Settings page for the updates to be pushed to the store accordingly. If this setting is enabled and an SKU is updated from the store platform, ShipHero will repush the old SKU back to the store.
To update a product's SKU in ShipHero, follow these steps:
- Open the Product Details page for the item you wish to update.
- Scroll down to the Actions section on the bottom left panel.
- Click the Change SKU button.
- Enter the new SKU and click Update to save your changes.
