Totes are containers used to organize and track items during the order fulfillment process. In ShipHero, totes are used during Multi-Item Batch and Single Item Batch processing flows. When a picker generates a batch, items are collected into totes tracked by unique barcodes.

Quick Facts About Totes in ShipHero
- Totes can only be created from the Totes page. Names are auto-generated by ShipHero upon creation.
- Bulk renaming of totes is not available in the UI. Contact ShipHero Support with a CSV containing the current and new tote names for assistance.
- Totes are warehouse-specific. In multi-warehouse setups, you must create distinct totes for each location — totes cannot be shared across warehouses.
- Totes are only assigned during batch picking and are not supported for Single Order or Bulk Ship processing flows.
- When a pick is confirmed in the mobile app, inventory is automatically deducted from the bin location and transferred to the tote.
For more information about how inventory is deducted from bin locations during picks, see Inventory Removed From Bin When Picked into a Tote.
Tote Best Practices
Follow these guidelines to improve picker efficiency:
- Keep spare totes available to replace any that have issues during fulfillment.
- Use color-coded totes to distinguish between shelves on a picking cart.
- Rename totes to reflect their use or physical attributes (e.g., "Large Tote 1", "Red Tote 2").
