FedEx's Electronic Trade Documents (ETD) is a free service that allows you to submit your international customs documentation electronically. By default, ShipHero uses ETD for all FedEx shipments.
For more information on ETD, please visit the FedEx website.
Key Benefits of using ETD
- Saves time and money: No need to print, sign, or attach paper documents.
- Speeds up customs: Documents are reviewed electronically before the shipment arrives.
- Reduces delays: Issues are caught early, so you can fix them before your package gets held up.
- Improves security: Your documents aren't attached to the outside of the box.
- Eco-friendly: Reduces paper waste.
NOTE: If you need to print these documents yourself, contact customer support to activate this feature on your account.
For 3PLs, the flag must be on your account; however, if you are using 3PL client carriers, the flag will need to be on the 3PL client account instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell if ShipHero is using ETD for my shipments?
When shipping international orders, your ShipHero account is automatically set up to send all custom documents via ETD as long as the destination country accepts this type of customs form. You will know that the documents were sent via ETD because the shipping label will have large letters stating “ETD” on it.

What if the country I am shipping to does not support ETD?
ShipHero knows which countries do not accept ETD and will automatically print four copies of the customs documents when the shipping label is printed. We recommend placing these customs forms in a pouch on the master shipping box for that order.
How can I see the customs documents in ShipHero?
Once the shipment is processed, you can view the customs documents by opening the order's details page. Scroll down to the Shipment Info section to see all tracking and customs information. The customs documents will be hyperlinked and listed below the tracking number.
