Kits are an essential feature in inventory management, especially for businesses that sell bundles of products. At its core, a kit in ShipHero consists of a parent Kit SKU and its components. The parent Kit SKU is the overarching product that customers purchase, while the components are the individual items that make up that kit.
This guide will walk you through how to create and edits kits, both individually and in bulk.

NOTE: The Parent (Kit) SKU and Component SKUs must already exist in ShipHero to use them in the kit creation process.
How to Create and Edit an Individual Kit
Creating kits one by one is straightforward through the ShipHero product details page.
- Go to Inventory > Products and select the parent Kit SKU.
- Add Components: Scroll down to the Components section on the Product Detail Page and add the individual products that make up your kit. Use the Quick Edit button to change the quantity of the component that is part of the kit.
- Specify Kit Type: By default all kits are created as Standard Kits. To change a kit to a Build Kit, click the Edit icon in the Product Details section, and check the option "(Build Kit) Break the components of this kit into separate line items on an order."
How to Create and Edit Kits in Bulk
ShipHero also provides options to create or edit kits in bulk, which is particularly useful for businesses with a large number of products or complex kit configurations. Please note the Product Kit CSV has a 100 line item limit.
This video walks you through how to Create Kits using a CSV Upload.
Creating Kits in Bulk via CSV
- Go to My Account > CSV Management.
- From the Item to Update list, select Product Kits.
- Download the Product Kits Template.
-
Fill out the Product Kits Template:
- Enter the parent Kit SKU, the Component SKU, and the Quantity of each component in the kit.

Editing Kits in Bulk via CSV
You can efficiently update existing kits using a similar bulk upload process.
- Go to My Account > CSV Management.
- From the Item to Update list, select Product Kits.
- Download the Product Kits Template (or reuse a previously filled template).
- Edit the appropriate columns in the template to reflect your desired changes.
- Save the file as a CSV.
- Upload the file by clicking +, selecting the CSV file, and clicking Upload.
Important Note: Components cannot be removed from an existing Kit in bulk using this method. This action needs to be done manually through the product details page or by contacting ShipHero's Professional Services team.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
When working with kits, you might encounter specific error messages.
"Please delete all bins this product is in before making it into a kit."
This error occurs because a kit SKU itself cannot be assigned to a specific bin location. Only its individual components have bin locations. To resolve this:
- Create a brand new SKU specifically for the kit, then add its components.
- Alternatively, if you're trying to convert an existing product into a kit, you must first remove any bin locations associated with that SKU before defining it as a kit.
