ShipHero has developed a Packing App to simplify the setup and configuration of workstations. The Packing App is like a thin wrapper around shipping.shiphero.com, allowing the site to communicate directly to the printer and scale. This is more efficient than the usual Workstation because the print request all happens locally.
How to Use the Packing App
Step 1: Download the App
Until we have given the application a permanent home, you need to download the app using the following:
Step 2: Select Your Printer
Once you have installed the app and launched it, you will see a menu like the following:
Select the printer you want to use. This change is saved locally to the packing station and does not have to be changed unless you change hardware.
Step 3: Try to Print!
NOTE: You can also see a video on how to pack orders using the Packing app or Shipping.shipHero.com
We do not have a way to test print with the new application; this is coming. For now, try to ship an order, print an invoice, or print an item barcode from the packing screen.
Troubleshooting the Packing App
I plugged in the printer/scale, and it does not appear in the menu. Now what?
Go to Utilities > Reload Hardware to refresh the list of available printers/scales.
Note: If the printer/scale does not show up, please check that it is configured correctly on the computer.
Why do I see Printer A for labels on stations.shiphero.com but Printer B on the Packing App?
The Packing App ignores what stations.shiphero.com has. We may change this in the future, but for now, it is independent, so each application may have a different configuration.
I somehow got out of shipping.shiphero.com. Now what?
Navigate to Utilities > Go to Order List.
How do I get the logs for this application so that I can share them with ShipHero Support?
Navigate to Utilities > Open Log Directory.
Why is it saying it might be malicious software on Windows?
Dismiss this warning and install anyway. The app is signed, but since it is new, Microsoft warns users.
The scale stopped working! What do I do?
Depending on the scale, it may help to unplug and plug it back in. We have seen some issues with scales freezing after a while.
There is an error while printing a label or quoting or scanning a barcode. Is this because of the Packing App?
No. The only thing that changes with the Packing App is how we print the different types of PDFs. Any other functionality (quoting, generating labels, allocating orders, etc.) is the same as if you were in your browser at shipping.shiphero.com.
I see a blank page and then the login page. Why isn't there any indication that the page is loading?
We are aware of this and are working on adding an indicator.
FAQs
Q: Does this application replace ShipHero's Workstation App?
A: Not as of now. If you need to print anything outside of shipping.shiphero.com, you will need to have the Workstation running on the packing station.
Q: What is the recommended setup?
A: The recommended setup is to run the Packing App for desktop printing and the Workstation for mobile printing.
Q: Will the Packing App update automatically?
A: Yes! The app will update silently, although you can see the updates happening in the logs. When you restart the app, if a new version is downloaded, it will update automatically.
Q: Everything is broken! I'm not too fond of this app and want to go back. What do I do?
A: You can close the Packing App and open up your browser to ship directly from shipping.shiphero.com. Please keep in mind that you will need to have the ShipHero Workstation App running for this to work.
