Shipping small, lightweight items efficiently is a key strategy for reducing overhead. For ShipHero users, leveraging USPS First-Class Letter mail is an effective way to ship flat items like stickers, decals, or thin documents.
IMPORTANT: This shipping method can only be used when shipping with Endicia (USPS).
There are several steps to complete when preparing to ship a package using USPS First-Class letter..
- Connect Your Endicia Account: This service requires an active USPS (Endicia) connection within your ShipHero settings. More information on Connecting your Endidica Account found here.
-
Activate the Standard Box: You must use the pre-defined USPS Letter box size. Go to the Shipping > Boxes page and activate the USPS Letter box. More information on How to Set Up Shipping Boxes found here.
IMPORTANT: Do not create a "Custom" box for this workflow. The system must recognize the specific USPS-mapped box size to trigger the correct rate.
-
Configure your order: Once your boxes are active, apply these settings to orders manually or via automation:
- Carrier: Select Endicia (USPS).
- Shipping Method: Choose First-Class Mail.
- Box Selection: Select the USPS Letter box activated in the previous step.
Key Elements on the Label
- Intelligent Mail Barcode (IMB): This allows the USPS to sort mail efficiently and is used for voiding labels if necessary.
- Postage Markings: The label displays the postage paid based on the weight of the letter or flat.
- Tracking Note: Standard First-Class Letters do not include tracking. A tracking number only appears if you add "Extra Services," such as insurance, to the order.
Automate for Efficiency
To avoid manual updates, create an Automation Rule to handle these shipments. For example, you can set a rule stating: "If the order weight is less than 3oz and the item Tag is 'Flat', set Carrier to Endicia, Method to First-Class Mail, and Box to USPS Letter." This ensures your team consistently uses the most cost-effective shipping method.
