How to Create a Work Order (Standard Process)
Assembly work orders require an Assembly SKU to be configured before you begin. See How to Create an Assembly SKU if you have not done this yet.
- Go to the Orders > Work Orders page and select Create Work Order.
-
The following step varies depending on your account configuration. Once the fields are entered, click Continue.
- Single-warehouse Accounts: Select the Requested date — the date the work order should be completed by.
- Multi-Warehouse Accounts: Select the Warehouse (where the work order will be completed) and the Requested date (when it should be completed by).
- 3PL Accounts: Select the 3PL Customer (the customer the work order is being completed for), Warehouse (if applicable), and the Requested date.

Name your work order and choose the Work order type (Assembly or Custom). If you want to track hours in WorkforceHero, enable Create a Special Project for this work order. See Overview: WorkforceHero Special Projects for more information. Then select Continue.
-
The next steps depend on whether you selected Assembly or Custom as the work order type.
For Assembly Work Orders:
-
Click the Select kit button and choose the Assembly SKU from the list.
Only SKUs with the "Is Assembly" product setting enabled appear in this list. See How to Create an Assembly SKU for configuration steps.
-
Enter the quantity to create and select Continue. The component list shows the Available quantity of each component SKU to help determine how many complete kits can be made. (Reminder: Available = On hand − Allocated.)
-
Optional: Input the Packing details and Assembly details, then select Continue. If not required, leave blank and select Continue.
For Custom Work Orders:
-
-
Upload Attachments (optional): For both Assembly and Custom work orders, you can upload attachments at this step. Supported file types: PDF, png, jpeg, jpg, doc, xlsx, xls, ppt, pptx, and mp4.
-
Click Create work order.
Note for 3PLs: When creating a work order on behalf of a 3PL client, ignore the Awaiting Approval prompt and select Create work order. No approval is required from the client and the work order will be created with an In Progress status.
How to Create a Work Order from Backorders
Work orders can be created when backorders exist for an Assembly SKU.
- Go to Inventory > Products and filter by "Is Assembly", "Yes".
- Check the box next to the Assembly SKU(s) with backorders. Bulk action is supported.
-
In the Bulk Manage section, click Create a Work Order. A work order for each selected SKU will be created automatically for the backordered quantity.
-
To view the newly created work orders, go to Orders > Work Orders.
Pending Quantity on Work Orders
If a work order already exists for a backordered Assembly SKU and a second work order for the same product is created, ShipHero deducts the quantity already attached to the existing work order from the backordered amount.
Formula: New work order quantity = Backorders − Pending on work order
Example: Assembly SKU "Holiday Treat Box - Cats" has 13 backorders with a Pending on Work Order quantity of 5. ShipHero subtracts the pending quantity: 13 − 5 = 8. The new work order is created for 8 units.
Once a work order is created, see Overview: Work Order Details Page for a full breakdown, or How to Process an Assembly Work Order to begin processing.
