GS1 retailer compliance labels are the barcode labels major retailers require on inbound wholesale shipments. ShipHero generates them for you from its native retailer label library, so you can meet each retailer's labeling rules without outside software and avoid the rejected shipments and chargebacks that incorrect labels cause.
Before You Begin
- Activation required: To turn on this feature or add a new retailer, contact your Customer Success Manager (CSM), Implementation Manager, or ShipHero Support.
- Paid feature: Each retailer connection has a one-time setup fee and a recurring monthly fee for support and maintenance. Pricing is set per retailer connection. For pricing details, contact your CSM, Onboarding contact, or Central Ops.

Set Up a GS1 Retailer Connection
To enable a retailer connection, send the ShipHero team two pieces of information:
- GS1 Company Prefix: the company prefix GS1 issued to you, typically 5 to 12 digits.
- Retailer or retailers: the specific retailers you plan to ship to.
The ShipHero technical team then configures the connection and sends you a unique trading_partner_id for each enabled retailer, along with any other data that retailer requires. The trading partner ID is the value that links an order to the correct retailer connection.
Pro-Tip
You can use the same GS1 Company Prefix for every retailer connection, or assign a unique prefix to each retailer, depending on your operational workflow.
Create Orders with GS1 Compliance Labels
You can create an order that uses GS1 compliance labels two ways: through the ShipHero Public API, or manually in the ShipHero dashboard.
GS1 Labels on Orders Created Through the Public API
Include the trading_partner_id for the destination retailer in your order payload. ShipHero detects that the order needs a compliance label and generates it in the format that retailer requires.
GS1 Labels on Manual Orders in the ShipHero Dashboard
To create a manual order that uses a compliance label:
- Go to the Wholesale interface and open the Shipping Details section of the order.
- Check the box labeled GS1 label required for this shipment.
- Select the destination retailer from the Retailer dropdown.
- Complete the remaining shipping details and click Save.
How ShipHero Generates the GS1 Compliance Label
When the shipment is processed, ShipHero builds the GS1 label using your GS1 Company Prefix and the formatting rules for the retailer you selected. You do not need any external software to generate the label.
