Workflows are assigned to products using ShipHero's automation rules. When an order containing a matching product is imported, ShipHero automatically applies the workflow and routes the order through the defined workstation stops.
Before You Begin
Create your workflow before setting up the automation rule. See How to Set Up a Workflow in ShipHero.
For an overview of how workflows fit into the ShipHero order process, see Overview: Workflows in ShipHero.

How to Assign a Workflow to a Product in ShipHero
Create an automation rule so ShipHero applies the workflow automatically when a matching product is imported on a new order.
Important
Set the trigger at the product level — not at the order level. An order-level trigger will not apply the workflow correctly.
- Go to Orders > Automation Rules and click Create New Rule.
- Set the Trigger to Product Name, Product Tag, or SKU.
- Choose the action Set Workflow and paste the workflow name exactly — a mismatch in spelling or spacing will cause the rule to fail.
- Click Create to save the rule.
Pro-Tip
To trigger multiple workflows on the same product, add more workflow actions to the same automation rule rather than creating separate rules.
When building custom products such as embroidery blanks, create a separate SKU for the unprinted blank and add it as a component to each variant SKU. For example, an unprinted t-shirt SKU can be a component of each printed variant so the blank is always included when any variant is ordered.
Workflow Automation Rule Behavior in ShipHero
| Behavior | Detail |
|---|---|
| Trigger level | The automation trigger must be set on the product or product tag — not at the order level. |
| When the rule runs | The rule runs during initial order import. To reapply a workflow after a reship, re-create the order manually in ShipHero or in the connected store. |
| Re-run automation | The re-run automation function is not available for workflow automation rules. |
