How to Create and Manage LPN Types in ShipHero

LPN Container Types let you create custom container names for your LPNs (License Plate Numbers, the unique identifiers ShipHero assigns to warehouse containers such as boxes and pallets) instead of using only the default Box or Pallet labels. Use them when your warehouse tracks a specific container style, such as a two-way pallet, and needs LPN labels and lists to show that name. Each custom type keeps the physical structure of its base container, so tracking, printing, and reporting stay consistent.

Before You Begin

  • Required User Role Permission: Users must have License Plate Numbers permissions enabled to view or manage LPN types.
  • Activation Required: To get started with LPNs in your account, contact your CSM or ShipHero Support to have the feature enabled.

For general LPN creation, statuses, and bulk actions, see Understanding the LPN Page in ShipHero. For an overview of LPNs in ShipHero, see Overview: License Plate Numbers (LPNs) in ShipHero.

Navigating the LPN Types Page in ShipHero

ShipHero lists all of your warehouse's custom LPN types in one place. To access the LPN Types page, go to the Settings > Inventory & locations > LPN page and click the Types tab.

If this is the first time creating custom LPN types, the create button appears in the center of the page; otherwise, it is in the top right corner. Once you create an LPN type, the Types tab shows your custom LPN types in a table with these columns:

Column Description
Name The custom LPN container type name, such as CUSTOM BOX or TWO WAY PALLET.
Based on The base container the type uses: BOX or PALLET.
Reusable Shows whether LPNs created from this type are reusable. A reusable LPN returns to Unused when it's emptied instead of retiring, so your team can load it again. Learn more in How to Set Up and Work with Reusable LPNs.
Active Shows whether the type is currently active and available to select when creating LPNs.

Creating a New LPN Type

Every custom LPN type is based on one of ShipHero's two standard base containers: Box or Pallet. The base container sets the physical structure of the LPN, while the type name is what your team sees on the LPN list and prints on the label. Create a new type when your warehouse needs an additional container option available when creating LPNs.

  1. Go to Settings > Inventory & locations > LPN > Types.
  2. Select Add LPN type.
  3. In the Base container field, select the standard container structure:
    • Select BOX for carton-style or box-style LPNs.
    • Select PALLET for pallet-style LPNs.
  4. In the Type name field, enter your custom name.
    • Example: HALF-PALLET
  5. Select the Reusability setting: Single-use (default) or Reusable. See How to Set Up and Work with Reusable LPNs for how reusable LPNs behave once they're in use.
  6. Click Save. The new type appears in the LPN Types list.

Choosing the Correct Base Container for LPN Types

The base container determines how an LPN type behaves structurally.

  • Use BOX for smaller container types, cartons, or package-level LPNs.
  • Use PALLET for large handling units that usually act as top-level LPNs.

Important

A pallet LPN can have Box LPNs nested into it, but a pallet LPN cannot be nested inside another LPN.

Editing an Existing LPN Type

Update an LPN type's name, active status, and Reusability setting when your warehouse's container naming changes or a type is no longer in use.

  1. Go to the LPN > Types page.
  2. Select the edit pencil icon for the LPN type you want to update.
  3. Update any of the following fields:
    • Type name
    • Active toggle
    • Reusability setting
  4. Click Save.

When the Active toggle is off, ShipHero removes the type as an option for new LPNs, but keeps it visible on any existing LPNs that already use it.
