Understanding LPN Nesting Rules in ShipHero

ShipHero limits how LPNs can nest inside each other to keep inventory data accurate and your mobile app running fast. Nesting is the process of placing one LPN inside another, such as a box inside a pallet. Understanding these limits helps your team pick, pack, and ship without hitting validation errors on the warehouse floor.

For an overview of LPNs in ShipHero, see Overview: License Plate Numbers (LPNs) in ShipHero.

Before You Begin

  • Required User Role Permissions: Users must have License Plate Numbers permissions enabled to view LPN nesting details or use Transfer Entire Location.
  • Activation Required: To get started with LPNs in your account, contact your CSM or ShipHero Support to have the feature enabled.

LPN Nesting Depth Rules

ShipHero supports a maximum of two levels for LPN nesting. Think of this as a parent and child relationship. You can put a box inside a pallet, but you cannot put a box inside a box that is already inside a pallet.

Nesting Type Allowed? Example
Box to Pallet Yes Items inside a box, box placed on a pallet.
Inner Box to Outer Box Yes Small items in a box, placed in a Master Case (a larger shipping carton that holds multiple smaller boxes).
Box to Box to Pallet No Exceeds the 2-level maximum depth.
Pallet to Pallet No Pallets must always be the final (top) level.

Important Nesting Exception

ShipHero allows 3 levels of nesting only during the wholesale packing process, for example an inner box inside an outer box on a pallet.

How to Nest LPNs with ShipHero Mobile

These steps nest one existing LPN inside another using Transfer Entire Location. To nest cartons while receiving a shipment, use the Palletize Cartons tool instead. See How to Receive Inbound Shipments Using LPNs in ShipHero Mobile.

The Transfer Entire Location feature in ShipHero Mobile nests one LPN into another when both the source and destination scanned entities are LPNs. This is especially useful when grouping multiple smaller cartons (child LPNs) into a larger container (parent LPN), such as preparing a pallet for outbound or staging a transfer.

  1. From the main menu, tap Inventory.
  2. Select Transfer Entire Location.
  3. In the From field, scan the barcode of the source LPN: the LPN you want to move into another.
  4. In the To field, scan the destination LPN's barcode. This becomes the parent LPN. ShipHero verifies that both the source and destination are valid LPNs before proceeding.
  5. Tap Confirm. The app shows a confirmation message.
