Receiving Location Best Practices in ShipHero

A receiving location is the location where you scan inventory in when it arrives. Its Sellable and Pickable settings decide when that inventory counts toward the available quantity ShipHero pushes to your sales channels, and when orders can be picked from it. ShipHero creates a default receiving location, and many warehouses add more to organize what they process into the warehouse.

Before You Begin

  • Location permissions: Your user role needs the Bins: Edit permission to create and manage locations.
  • Receiving permissions: Your user role needs Purchase Orders permissions to receive inventory against a purchase order.
  • Role setup: For steps to change a user's role, see How to Create and Manage Roles and Permissions.

For the full receiving workflow, see Overview: Receiving in ShipHero. For how to create locations and set Sellable and Pickable, see How to Create and Manage Locations in ShipHero.

How Sellable and Pickable Settings Affect Receiving in ShipHero

Choose the receiving location setup that matches how your warehouse handles inventory after it is scanned in.

Receiving location setup Store availability Order allocation and picking Best for
Non-sellable (non-pickable) Inventory is omitted from the available quantity pushed to your sales channels. Pickers are not directed to this location. Holding inventory you are not ready to sell, such as pre-sale inventory.
Sellable, non-pickable Inventory counts toward On Hand. The available quantity pushed to your sales channels updates when you receive it. Orders can allocate to this inventory. Pickers are not directed to it, so orders cannot be picked until the inventory moves to a pickable location. Updating store availability at receiving, then putting inventory away before orders need it.
Sellable, pickable Inventory counts toward On Hand. The available quantity pushed to your sales channels updates when you receive it. Customers can buy the items as soon as you receive them. ShipHero allocates the inventory as orders import, and pickers may be directed to the receiving area to pick. Not recommended as a best practice. It suits only very small operations that do not need multiple inventory moves, or warehouses that purposely receive to pickable locations.

Important

Orders can allocate to inventory in a sellable, non-pickable location before anyone can pick it. Move received inventory to a pickable location before those orders need to ship. An order is Ready to Pick only when all of its items are in pickable locations. See Troubleshooting: Why Is My Order Not Pickable? if an order stays not pickable after you receive inventory.

To take orders before inventory arrives, see How to Sell Inventory Before It Arrives (Sell Ahead). For more uses of non-sellable locations, see How to Use Non-Sellable Bins.

How to Move Received Inventory Out of a Receiving Location in ShipHero

ShipHero tracks every move of inventory from one location to another. Move received inventory from the ShipHero Mobile app using Putaway or a transfer. See How to Use Putaway V2 with LPN Support in ShipHero Mobile and How to Transfer Inventory Using ShipHero Mobile.

To make non-sellable inventory available to sell, move it to a sellable location. To change a receiving location from non-sellable to sellable, or the other way, move all of its inventory out first. ShipHero records those moves in the change log, so you can trace when the inventory became available to your stores.
